FWIW, why do you categorize all people as undesirable who shop at Walmart?  I thought most of the Archie Bunker's of the World were gone, but apparently not.

I personally don't shop there often, but would if it were the most convenient place to run too.  Does that make me undesirable?

I don't want to start an argument, but when you live in a very diverse community, as we do, you need to accept it as it is, accept people for who they are, and not classify individuals as "undesirable" based on where they shop.

whew ... down from the soap box ... Peace!
What exactly is your definition of undesireable? Because when I reread my post it did not come of as being racist, yet your "soap box commentary" tags me as a racist.

It has nothing to do with race and if you don't go near Walmart as you have said then how can you comment?

Walmart the company has a long history of being anti American in the treatment of its employees from forcing them to work through breaks and lunches to even locking them in the store overnight so they cannot go out.

Im no racist and while there are people that shop at Walmart for the prices many of the people that shop there are not our neighbors. Just go there and see for yourself then feel free to come back on here and tell us if you feel comfortable leaving your car unlocked in the parking lot.

Its not a racial, ethnic slam, trash is trash, White, Black, Spanish, Asian, Indian, Italian, Polish, German etc.

Again,  I will argue for South Street never to open up.  Take a walk to the "circle" at South and Longcommon at 5:30 on a weekeday.  Stand there for 15 minutes and count the cars.  Last year, middle of summer, 5:30-5:45 had 189 cars.  Yes, 189!!! People cut thru our neighborhood all the time.  If South opens up, it would be worse.  We have lots of kids who walk to school, lots who ride their bikes on the path, not to mention all the families that live on Longcommon.  We don't need more "cut thru" traffic that will be zipping down our roads!

I am not a Wal-Mart person, but I knew that land would eventually be developed.  I don't think it will cause any problems here.  Even with traffic-  we are too far down Bowes.

I'm off of Gansett and if I'm traveling south I take Longcommon to Bowes and every car that I have ever followed behind on Longcommon either turns on South St, or into Waterford.

Turning on Bowes rd from the south off of Randall is already an adventure. Now through in this new Walmart superstore and a Sam's club will directly effect traffic and cause us to spend more time in traffic on Randall and Bowes.

Not to mention how many people will now probably cut through the residential subdivision behind Nicks.

Opening South st would be beneficial for our community. IMO

I apologize if I mis-read you post.  I do occasionally go to Walmart; both the one in Elgin and the one in Batavia (by Sam's Club).  I don't see anything/anyone undesirable there and have, on occasion, ran into one of our neighbors there.  And, I would not leave my car unlocked in any parking lot.

Having said that, I do agree, based on what I have read, that WalMart is not the best to their employees and that is reason enough to stay away (and I may just start doing that.)  Once the new Sams Club/Walmart is complete, we will continue to go to Costco.

Again, I apologize, no harm done. Upon reading, it struck me wrong.  This is yet another example how the written word could be misinterpreted from its true meaning.

Cheers!

I have an extended family member that has been working for Walmart for more than 20 years... and she states that what has been stated in the public news is a little over rated.. yes there are bosses at all companies that do what has been said about Walmart... no breaks, lock ins, and such... but that is with a lot of companies... I dont usally shop at walmart, but would if it was closer... as for undesirables, there are those people every where you shop... I just shop around them and move on... South Street opening up will be a benifit and I will be looking forward to that happening... as well as the new Sam's Club/Walmart..

I live off of that circle and trust me-  not all those cars are going to Waterford and most don't turn down South!  My main concern is that my children will be old enough soon to be able to walk/bike to friends' houses.  A lot of them live on the other side of South where they will cross.  I have taught my kids to be careful crossing the street but it only takes one reckless driver to hurt them.  Increasing the amount of cars on South increases their chances of being hurt.  I also will have kids walking to school soon.  In the morning "rush," people running late will fly down South (as they already do).  Again, more cars=more chances of someone getting hurt.  And with all the driver's texting nowadays... Maybe I am paranoid as I saw my friend at age 9 get struck by a car and die while we were waiting at a stop light.  A car jumped the curb, hit him and he died instantly... I'll never get that image, or his last scream from my head.  I can't imagine that happening to anyone again and I just feel that people who are not familiar with the neighborhood (the cars that cut through) won't think twice about speeding through.

Still don't think Bowes will be that bad.  I've never had a problem driving down it before or turning onto it and I am on it everyday. And just an idea-  People would use South Street to avoid that traffic!

A better solution for the speeding cars would be to request the city to install speed humps on Longcommon. Trust me, having hit one doing even just 25 MPH (it was dark in Chicago proper and I couldn't see it), it was a hard enough hit to stall my little car's engine. It forces everybody to slow down and drive over them carefully.

You cannot prevent people from using neighborhoods as pass-throughs, nor can you get people to comprehend what the heck that "wierd triangle-shaped sign that says 'Yield'" means. You're better off doing what you can to teach your children to avoid streets and cross carefully, which I've no doubt that you've already done.

Im sure you might get a few cars that cut through, but have you ever thought that just maybe those cars that are not turning like I said could be myself and other homeowners that live north of South st?

I would like to know why Elgin doesn't lower the speed limits in the subdivision, except on the major roads like Gansett, South and Longcommon, to 25.   I still can't figure that one out.    The speed limit is 30 on the main roads and that's OK as long as they enforce it.  Speed bumps wouldn't bother me, if they'll work.   People drive much too fast throughout the subdivisions.   That being said, I would like to see South Street open as well.   I think it would help the ingress/egress in the neighborhood.   Putting the stop signs up at the two northern round-a-bouts would help too.   The yield signs are not working as well as they should be.   The circle at South and Longcommon is the only circle they really built right.

I completely agree with lowering the speed limit in the subdivisions.  I live on Waterford and as the cars turn off of Longcommon they go flying past us.  I'm terrified to let my kids play in the front of the house unless I am standing right there.  We have talked about calling the City and asking them to post a sign that says SLOW DOWN - CHILDREN AT PLAY or something.  I would not mind a speed bump just before my house!!   I also agree that stop signs at the 2 rounds on the north side is a good idea.  Too many close calls.  And it will continue to be a problem.  It's just the nature of cars and traffic.

notwithstanding the convenience of the shopping,  the road and turn lane improvements at Bowes and Randall will be greatly appreciated.
