Is there a reason everyone is moving out of Highland woods? Taxes too high?

Don't know about Highland Woods, but as soon as my wife retires, we're out of here in the Providence area...and Illinois...because of the taxes.  I pay over $7000 a year for schools I don't use and other people's pensions.  That's in addition to the other $3000+ per year I pay for other things.  You'd think I lived in a mansion on a 50 acre piece of land.  Enough already.

I'd have to agree...we pay over 8,000 per year in taxes on the home.  Same home in TN taxes are 2,000 a year.  There is no way we are going to retire in Illinois.  We can do much better in almost ANY other state!

I agree that taxes are too high and the general state of IL finances is horrible.

Having lived in Providence for 10 years, and just having a child starting school this coming year, I'm finally able to "get back" some of what I've paid in taxes over the years but the real discussion should not be around people paying for things they don't use.

I don't need a firetruck to put out a fire for my house, but I pay for it in case I need it. I paid for District 301 for 10 years (close to $4k per year on my taxes, $40+k) for education I did not "need" up until this point.

The State of Illinois pension situation is a mess as well. I feel for the people who were promised a retirement (and who never had a 401k or other savings) but there are so many cases of abuse that it makes the whole system look bad. Add to that politicians using it as a piggy bank to take money from and never put pack leads us to the situation we're at today.

RET08: I'm not knocking your comments in any way, I think the general sense among most in Illinois is that the entire system is messed up and needs to be fixed.

We know a family who just put their house on the market in Highland Woods.  Yes it was because of taxes.

We will be leaving Illinois as soon as our youngest is out of high school.
